Archeopteryx Painting

Quick pencil sketch for composition.

Archeopteryx Pair
2011, acrylic on canvas paper, 9 x 12 in.

This painting was created as a gift for my friends Craig and Rhonwyn's wedding!  With this year being the 150th anniversary of Archeopterxy's discovery, this early birds were the perfect subject.  I have recently been experimenting with a more impressionist style using a more limited colour pallet.  While I am really happy with the painting, I have still managed to use the primary colours - red, blue, yellow.    Hmm, anyone have any suggestions on how to limit my pallet more effectively?

That's stunning, Bond!

In this case I think the bright+dark palette is perfect. Don't mess about here.

An exercise worth trying if you want to attempt a limited palette, is to pick one colour - say a shade of brown or blue - and black and white. And use only those three. When you finish the entire painting, allow yourself to go back with another colour as an accent: a reddish brown instead of the dominant brown. It creates a unified painting where the eye wanders in a field of similar light and hue.

But you certainly don't need that here. Excellent.

Really enjoy this image.

For some reason it put me in mind of the behavior we see too little of in 'paleoart'.

We need more of this kind of thing, else historical animals will ever be stereotypes.
